What We Say:
We all want a source we can turn to for definitive answers regarding which cosmetic brands and ingredients are truly safe and The Environmental Working Group has established this database to serve that function. Still, while it is certainly as good as it gets, hours of research may leave you with many unanswered questions. Search for individual ingredients, products and brand names and you will be given the most current information available. There is a complex formula that leads to the assignment of a number from 0 (safest) to 10 (most harmful). The real problem is that a vast majority of ingredients used in skin care products have never been tested for safety and are not subject to third party regulation. This means that just because a brand, product or ingredient rates well, it is by no means totally safe. Further, your search may yield a 2 (considered relatively safe) but when you look at the concerns, cancer and neurotoxicity may be listed. Many natural ingredients undergo some not so natural processing which leads to potential contamination. So, if a substance has a poor rating, there can be variables that may not apply to the version you are finding in the product you wish to purchase. In the world of natural skin care, this is the most frequently referenced resource. Despite its limitations, we urge you to check it out, enter those unpronounceable words you've seen on the labels of your favorite beauty product and decide for yourself if it something you want to soak in.

Worth Knowing
Parent Company
"At EWG, our team of scientists, engineers, policy experts, lawyers and computer programmers pores over government data, legal documents, scientific studies and our own laboratory tests to expose threats to your health and the environment, and to find solutions. Our research brings to light unsettling facts that you have a right to know."
Useful Services
The database allows you to type in an ingredient, brand or product name and get extensive information about its safety. You can also search for the safest options in each category of products (sunscreens, lipsticks, shampoos etc.)
Take Action
Donate to the organization, sign petitions, purchase conscientious products and stay informed.
Pros
Absolutely the most comprehensive information available to research and assess the safety of cosmetics. In an instant you can get a rating on a product or ingredient that gives you a good idea if it is safe.
Cons
So many variables impede ones ability to know for sure what the quality of a particular product is. The same ingredient can be fine in one product but tainted in another and there is no way for the database to account for that other than to factor in questionability.
